songs for broken hearts, no. 24

I first heard Song Sung Blue when Mac Davis sang it on his variety show. Remember The Mac Davis Show? I must’ve been 5 or 6 years old, and for many years afterwards, whenever I heard the song come on the radio, I thought the words were ‘Sun Sun Blue.’ I’ve always loved its sing-songy-ness, especially the part with the girl echoing the words on the final time through. There's also a subtle but very lovely use of horns on the instrumental break. And once again, Neil gets to the heart of things when he sings, ‘funny thing, but you can sing it with a cry in your voice / And before you know, start to feeling good, you simply got no choice.’ Yes indeed…
